2018: Of Snow and Change

Starr Mill in Senoia, Georgia
Seasons change and so does life. The conclusion of 2017 meant some major changes concerning my career.

For almost 20-years, radio broadcasting full-time was my career of choice. The radio industry is facing many challenges and changes as technology rapidly advances and new mediums emerge and mature. Those who embrace the changes are more likely to survive and bring their stories to new audiences.

In November, I took a job with a national commercial furniture maker. I wish I had the skills that the folks in the shop have -- they make some really beautiful furniture. My job, however, is in the office as the web guy and online marketing person. The skills I am learning on a daily basis are valuable as it relates to what I am trying to do here on Country Ham and Grits. A big change in my career.

2018 saw some big changes in the weather too! In 8-years of living in Georgia, this has to be one of the coldest winters I've experienced in the South. A little reminder of the Vermont winters of my youth.

Cold front seen from my office

It was late in the afternoon when the latest cold front slammed into Georgia. I watched the changes roll in from the comfort of my new office. A few days later, and we would be seeing temps fall into the teens at night and barely cracking 32 F in the day. Along with that came about two inches of snow!

Muscadine Creek snowfall

In the grand-scheme of things, two inches of snow is not much to get excited about...unless it's the most snow you've seen at one time in your life as my daughter Kayla pointed out.

My oldest daughter Noelle learned the hard way that snow can also conceal ice underneath. She took a tumble while excitedly running through the snow. We all had a good laugh. Of course that ice shut down Muscadine Creek and the surrounding areas for two days!

The exciting adventures at Muscadine Creek continue in 2018 and we hope you come back for more stories, podcasts, videos, and more!
